Do I have to clean the student’s room, pick up after them or do their laundry?

No, the student is responsible for their own space and cleaning up after themselves.

While we do ask that our hosts create a welcoming environment and aid in the student's adjustment to life in the States, the student is responsible for taking care of their own room and laundry. Please make your expectations and house rules very clear when the student arrives. If the student is not following your rules, remind them as often as you need to. Please remember that  many students may have never cleaned or done their own laundry before and may not know how to do so.  Keep cultural differences in mind and consider showing your student how to use the washing machine, clean, where to find the supplies and what you expect for frequency and standards. You may need to follow up and give them feedback (and offer some kind patience) as they learn.
